Goti Pua Dance - Odisha


Goti Pua is folk dance of Odisha,  the performance of dance is done by a single boy. Goti means single and Pua means boy. As the name indicates this sacred dance is performed only by boys dressed up as girls. The decadence and declination came in to Devadasi or mahari tradition .Some historians say that this dance tradition appears to have originated during the region of Prataprudradev (1497 A.D. to 1540 A.D.) and gained popularity in the subsequent Muslim Rule. Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the originator of tGoti Pua dance tradition. The Gotipua Dance Tradition is now seen in puri Raghurajpur village on the banks of river Bhargabi, which is  10 kms away from Puri town. The Gotipua Guru Maguni Das are learning the finer elements of Gotipua dance to several Gotipua dancers .

Pure dance or nritya is performed which is followed by Pallavi. The gestures or Bhangis, body movements and Various mudras are very difficult in Gotipua dance. Mudras are dhwaja, danda, tripatka kartarimukha, sarpashira and many hand mudras. The dance performance starts with an invocation five Gods and Goddesses,
 "Bhumi Pranam" means Prayers offer to the earth, because in hindu earth means Maa.
“Sri Guru Vandana” means  prayers offered to the spiritual master.
"Sa-Re-Ga-Ma” means A pure dance number.
 “Abhinaya” means Enactment of devotional songs.
 “Bandha Nrutya” means Rythms of acrobatic postures.
